AVI was born on December 23, 1937 in New York City. His real name is Edward Irving Wortis. Avi has a twin sister, when they were little Avi and his sister would play together. Avi's sister gave him a nickname which is now Avi he has kept this name for his whole life. On the book covers it would show his name Avi instead of Edward Wortis. Avi made a decision in Jan 1954 to write books. AVI writes many different genres such as: Children books, Humorous tales, Young Adult books, Mystery, Adventure, Murder and Fantasy Stories. On January 1959 Avi receives a B.A in history of University of Wisconsin. Avi receives a M.A. in Drama of University of Wisconsin. Avi graduates from University of Wisconsin and married a weaver named Joan Gabriner. He went back to school for the last time at Columbia University to receive a M.S in Library Science. Avi publishes his first book called Things That Sometimes Happens in 1970. 1980 Avi wins the Christopher Award for Encounter of Easton. In 1982 Joan and Avi divorce. He wins the Scott O' Dell Historical Fiction Award for one of his books The Fighting Ground in 1984. In 1986 Avi takes focus and concentration on writing for the Library Journal and the School's Library Journal. He wins his first Newberry Award in 1991 of The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. He also wins The Boston Globe Horn Award for The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Avi wins the Second Newberry Award for Nothing But the True in 1992. Avi wins the 2nd Boston Globe Horn Award for Nothing But the True. Won the 3rd Boston Globe Horn Award for Poppy in 1995. He wins the Newberry Medal for his fiftieth book called Crispin: The Cross of Lead in 2003. In 2010 Avi published his second book of Crispin: The End of Time. Avi marries his second wife named Coppeila Kahn which also ended. Then, he married his last wife her name is Linda K. Wright. Avi is a father of seven children which include: Kevin Wortis, Shaun Wortis, Robert Wortis, Catherine Wortis, Hayden Kahn, Gabriel Kahn (step-child), and Jack Spina. April 10,2012 Avi wrote many books people say, "You name it, Avi had written all the amazing books."
Avi makes many books for children and young adults. These books are good for book reports and just for fun to read and to experience what he writes. Avi has published over 61 books in the United States of America. My favorite book that Avi had wrote was Strange Happening, A Tale of Transformation. There are five different tales of Transformation in the book Strange Happening. such as Bored Tom, Babette the Beautiful, Curious, The Shoemaker and Old Scratch and Simon. My favorite tale is Bored Tom.
